Simon Cox scored his second goal of the season to earn Southend their second home win of the season in Sky Bet League One.
The three points ended a run of three straight league defeats, while ending the Cod Army’s unbeaten run stretching back to the first day of the season.
And the match winner said after that Blues’ pressing game was what led to the victory.
On the win over Fleetwood Town…
"We needed that; three points, and the clean sheet really, to give us confidence to go forward.
"I thought in the few weeks previous we’ve been doing some good stuff, but not shut the ball out. But on Saturday, in the change of system, willingness to run forward, to defend and put bodies on the line, if we keep doing that all season we will win more games than we lose."
On the tactics to press…
"The Manager said to us in the dressing room, and in the last couple of days, high energy, press the ball, don’t be passive, get stuck in and things will start to fall for you.
"We put a good press on in the first half and probably should have done more with the chances we had. We did the same in the second half and got the goal. You could see what we wanted to do and that’s how the goal came about, so it was nice."
On getting on the scoresheet…
"A classic striker’s finish, straight off the heel! It was pressure from us and forced them into a mistake, it was well seen by Theo because it’s easy as a forward to shoot there, but he looked for me in the centre with a guaranteed goal, as much as I did well to miss!
"At the end of the day I’m not bothered how it goes, as long as it goes in the back of the net and I thought we fully deserved the three points."
