Shrews vs Blues: Previous Encounters

12 September 2018

Ahead of Blues’ game against Shrewsbury Town we venture into the past and look at some previous encounters between the Shrews and Blues at Montgomery Waters Meadow...

League Two

Saturday 20th November 2010

Shrewsbury Town 1-1 Southend United

Blues midfielder Anthony Grant earned a point at the Meadow with a stunning late volley.

Mark Wright put Shrewsbury ahead after latching on to Matt Harrold's header to score his fifth goal in seven games.

Wright then went close to scoring a second with a sharp left-foot shot that was well saved by Glenn Morris.

But Grant made up for a glaring miss in the first half with his volley, securing a draw for the Shrimpers only three minutes from the final whistle.

League Two

Saturday 21st January 2012

Shrewsbury Town 2-1 Southend United

Jermaine Grandison's late goal saw 10-man Shrewsbury topple League Two leaders Southend.

Marvin Morgan was sent off for Town in the first half after lunging at Southend midfielder Jean-Paul Kalala.

James Collins put Shrewsbury ahead from the spot after being fouled by Peter Grant but sub Ryan Hall fired in from the edge of the box to make it 1-1.

Grandison headed in Matt Richards' corner as Graham Turner's men kept up their season-long unbeaten home record.

Southend remain top after Crawley and Cheltenham both failed to win.

League Two

Saturday 7th February 2015

Shrewsbury Town 1-1 Southend United

Debutant Tyrone Barnett hit a late equaliser for Shrewsbury against Blues to keep up his new side's unbeaten home League Two record.

But it could not prevent the morning leaders being knocked off the top, as Burton and Wycombe both won.

Barnett fired home with his left foot from inside the penalty area with five minutes remaining.

Midfielder Jack Payne had put Southend ahead when he found the top-right corner with a right-foot shot.

Shrewsbury still boast the best home record in the country, having now won 12 and drawn three of their 15 league games, conceding just six goals.

League One

Tuesday 2nd February 2016

Shrewsbury Town 1-2 Southend United

Loanee Stephen Hendrie's late winner helped Blues beat Shrewsbury Town to climb to seventh place in League One.

Will Atkinson's 25-yard shot put the visitors ahead, before Andy Mangan equalised for Shrewsbury from close range just after the break.

Southend's Michael Timlin was dismissed for a second yellow with 25 minutes remaining for a foul on Jack Grimmer.

But the 10 men won it when, from 12 yards, Hendrie smashed in on-loan Norwich debutant Jamar Loza's cross.

Blues move level on points with sixth-placed Millwall, while Shrewsbury remain a point clear of the relegation zone in 20th.
