Big Preview: Southend United vs Peterborough United

7 September 2018

Southend United vs Peterborough United...

Blues return to Sky Bet League One action tomorrow afternoon and they face a tough test at Roots Hall as they welcome the table-toppers Peterborough United.

The Posh, with manager Steve Evans and striker Jason Cummings both receiving monthly manager and player awards in League One respectively, currently occupy top spot on goal-difference having dropped just two points from their six games so far.

They’ll be on the lookout for a first win away at Southend since 1999, and will do so knowing they have scored the most goals out of all the teams in the top four tiers (16).

They arguably won’t have a better opportunity either with Southend’s list of absentees showing no sign of abating with influential players such as captain Mark Oxley missing.

Chris Powell’s side though will have taken some confidence from the come-from-behind win against Cambridge in midweek with the Blues boss hoping to celebrate his birthday with three points.

3rd February 2018: Peterborough United 0 vs 1 (Demetriou) Southend United

6th December 2017: Peterborough United (Edwards, Maddison) 2 vs 0 Southend United

As mentioned earlier, Blues have quite an extensive list of players missing through suspension, injury as well as international call-ups, with Jason Demetriou and Harry Kyprianou away with Cyprus.

Captain Mark Oxley and winger Michael Kightly begin their three-game suspensions after both were sent off against Charlton, leaving goalkeeper Nathan Bishop in line to make his first league start.

Shawn McCoulsky will be pushing for a starting spot after scoring twice against Cambridge in the Checkatrade Trophy while Saturday might also see league debuts for Harry Bunn and Taylor Moore.

Peterborough, on the other hand, are reporting a relatively clean bill of health with only Callum Cooke unlikely to feature after he picked up an ankle injury against MK Dons in midweek.

Matt Godden, Jason Cummings and Siriki Dembele will all be looking to continue their good form having all been nominated for the PFA League One Player of the Month Award for August.

Chris Powell, Southend United Manager:

“We always look at ways to try and win a game. We’ll have to look at some strengths that they have, which they undoubtedly do have. It’s about is trying to create chances, score those chances and win a football match.

“We want to get a result, but we’ve been very up and down. We’ve had good performances and haven’t got a result and then we’ve had a real resilient on the road. We’ve had a comfortable home win against Bradford, but you just want to get going.

“We’re better than what we have accumulated points-wise, that’s for sure. We’ll take the next game on its merits. The target is three points and that’s what we want to achieve.

Steve Evans, Peterborough United Manager:

“We will go to Southend full of confidence because we are top of the league. I can’t get too interested in any problems they have. I know they will field a side with many top players and they will be well organised by an outstanding manager.

“It’s always hard to win at Southend and Posh have a poor record there so we are under no illusions about the task we have. But we have the greatest incentive of all to get a win. If we pick up three points we will still be top of the table on Saturday night and that’s the best place to be.

“We’ve enjoyed being at the top and we want to stay there for as long as we can so we need to bounce back from our worst performance of the season last weekend.”
