Blues fell to a third successive league defeat as goals from Greg Docherty and Lee Angol secured Shrewsbury a 2-0 win at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.
Shrews, who went into the game looking for their first win of the season, made the perfect start to proceedings scoring after five minutes with Docherty’s well-taken strike inside the area.
Southend rallied and went close to levelling before the interval through Simon Cox but were caught with a sucker-punch second goal in first-half stoppage time through Lee Angol.
Angol had a superb chance to extend Shrewsbury’s lead in the second-half but he was denied by a reflex save by David Stockdale with Stockdale’s opposite number Joel Coleman rarely troubled.
Defeat for Blues was their fourth straight loss to Shrewsbury and the win for the home side saw them leapfrog Southend in the table following their first maximum of the campaign.
The result, as well as the performance, will raise more questions than answers for Blues boss Chris Powell who will be disappointed following more positive showings in defeats to Peterborough United and Charlton Athletic.
