History Books: Gills vs Blues

12 October 2018

Let's open the archives and look at the long history between Gillingham and Southend...

The two sides have met a total of 113 with Blues winning 37, drawing 30 and losing 46 to the Gills.

There have been 293 goals scored between the two sides with Blues netting 141 and Gillingham scoring the other 152.

We have faced Gillingham in all three English Cup competitions but we haven’t beaten them in the Carabao Cup (English League Cup) competition (W0/D1/L1).

The first time Blues won away to Gillingham was in the English Division 3 (SOUTH) on Saturday 30th October 1926 - Gillingham 2-3 Southend.

We have played Gillingham in every month of the footballing season calendar (August-May).

The last time Blues won away to Gillingham was back on Monday 13th February 2012, this also happens to be the last season that Southend did the double over their Kent rivals.

Southed United’s all-time leading goal-scorer Roy Hollis scored 135 goals in four seasons for the club while Gillingham’s leading goal-scorer of Brian Yeo scored 149 goals in eight seasons.

Andrew Crofts played for Wales 12 times while with Gillingham but, Southend United’s Cyprian defender Jason Demetriou has played 15 times for his country while with the club and if he makes an appearance during the International period he could raise that tally to 17 caps.
