On Saturday, thanks to the Southend United Ex-Players Association (SUEPA), we are delighted to welcome back to Roots Hall one of the heroes of the 2006 League Cup win versus Manchester United.
Efetobore Sodje was signed by Steve Tilson from Yeovil Town in January 2006 and played a key part in our run in to the League One title that season. He scored on his home debut in a 4-1 win over Brentford and put in a series of commanding defensive displays before breaking his league away at Bournemouth at the start of April.
Efe, who had played for Nigeria in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea, recovered over the close season, eventually making his comeback in September and for much of the remainder of the season partnered either Adam Barrett or Peter Clarke in the centre of the defence.
But it was in that never-to-be-forgotten night on 7 November 2006 that Efe put in one of his arguably finest ever displays, helping to keep Rooney, Ronaldo and co at bay as Freddy’s goal won it. Indeed, we’ll be checking on Saturday that Efe still hasn’t got Rooney in his pocket!
Be sure to be in your seat early when we take on Blackpool to help give Efe a great Roots Hall welcome as he gets introduced to the crowd shortly before kick-off.
