Chris Powell says his Southend United side have to be better “in all departments”.
Blues travel to the Checkatrade.com Stadium for their Emirates FA Cup First Round Replay against Crawley Town.
But having suffered late agony in the league against Blackpool last time out, Powell believes it’s a collective improvement that’s required to progress in the cup.
“You are only as good as your last game and we didn’t do well enough to bring the points home,” he said. “Do we have to do better? Yes. Do we have to be stronger with regards to our mentality? Yes. We’ll be doing that in this game coming up, regardless of personnel.
“Whenever you lose a game everyone looks at the defenders and goalkeepers, but actually it’s a collective.
“We have to have a fighting mentality, which we do have. But clearly we have to have more clean sheets and a real mentality throughout the game to get results.
“The next game is Crawley at their place and we have to be better and stronger in all departments to get a result.”
The winner of tonight’s game will have home advantage against Barnsley in the Second Round.
Despite feeling aggrieved that Blues aren’t already in there, Powell knows his side will have to turn up and put in a big performance to get through.
“It’s here. We didn’t get the job done in the first game, quite clearly we should’ve done but we didn’t so we have to play another game.
“It’s important for us a club and even though they’re coming thick and fast and we’ve got a few aches and knocks and a suspension now, it’s a game that we have to deal with and a game we need to be prepared for.
“Whether it’s a spark or just a positive performance and result, because we know whenever you get that you feel good about yourself as an individual and a team and a football club.
“Every game we want to do well in and we look at Crawley as no different.”
