Southend United midfielder Dru Yearwood has been handed an England U18 call-up.
The Blues youngster will travel to China with the young Three Lions squad to play against Uruguay, the host nation and Hungary in the Panda Cup.
And Yearwood was surprised at his inclusion when he found out.
“It’s a strange feeling but I’m so happy that the hard work has paid off,” said Yearwood. “I didn’t think it would be possible.
“Usually it’s the boys playing for Arsenal and Chelsea and not Southend.
“It’s good that boys in the lower leagues can also play for England.”
Yearwood will meet up with the squad on May 16 before jetting out to China the following day.
And he went on to say the call-up is the perfect end to an excellent first campaign in the first team, having made 29 appearances and been named the Young Player of the Season.
“It’s the icing on the cake for me and I’m happy to be recognised.
“I couldn’t have asked for much more in my first season in the first team other than scoring a goal! But I had a great year.
“It’s one of the goals for me long term, to play international football, and it will be interesting to see what it’s like playing against other countries.”
Despite coming off in the first half of Blues’ game against Bristol Rovers last we, Yearwood is hoping to be fit come May 23 when England U18s take on Uruguay in their first game.
“I’m hoping to be fit come the games so I’ll be working hard to but I’m sure it will be alright.”
