A look back at the 17/18 season for Blues…
Our Season Review moves into the busy Christmas period, as we enter December.
In total there were seven games for Phil Brown’s side, six in Sky Bet League One and another in the Checkatrade Trophy.
Things got off to a good start at home to an improving Oldham Athletic side under Ritchie Wellens.
Blues ended their three-game winless run with a 2-0 triumph against the Latics, and they also banished their spot kick woes in doing so as Jason Demetriou took over penalty duties to send Johny Placide the wrong way for the opening goal.
The right back was then involved in more penalty controversy as he fouled Rob Hunt to give Craig Davies an opportunity to equalise, but Mark Oxley pulled off a superb stop.
Josh Wright rounded off the win in the second half, finishing a fine team goal.
Four days after seeing off Oldham, the attention turned to the Checkatrade Trophy as Blues travelled to Peterborough United.
It was the end of the road in that particular competition, though, as the Posh ran out 2-0 winners thanks to Gwion Edwards and Marcus Maddison goals.
Following the Checkatrade Trophy disappointment, another dismal afternoon for Blues laid in store at Bristol Rovers, who put three past an unfortunate Mark Oxley who was Southend’s best player on the day.
Oxley pulled off some brilliant saves, however he couldn’t do anything to stop Billy Bodin, Ellis Harrison and Liam Sercombe scoring as Rovers recorded 11 shots on target from 23 attempts compared to none for Blues.
Two defeats in two became three in three as Bradford visited Roots Hall, which also ended Blues’ unbeaten home run in the league.
Charlie Wyke secured the win with an injury-time penalty in a 2-1 victory after Nile Ranger has equalised in reply to Dominic Poleon’s early goal.

Two days before Christmas Southend travelled up to Scunthorpe United and, despite seeing the Iron go close on a few occasions, they took the lead through Jason Demetriou, who was turning into a prolific outlet from right back.
But it was to be another year without a win at Glanford Park as the hosts were able to overturn a deficit to leave Blues languishing at 13th in midtable.

The quick turnaround for the Boxing Day clash at home to Charlton Athletic on the back of the 3-1 defeat to Scunthorpe United didn’t deter Blues in this particular instance.
Simon Cox set Blues on their way in just the second minute, followed swiftly after by Michael Turner’s glancing header, his first goal for the club, inside 11 minutes.
Former Southend midfielder Ben Reeves pulled one back but Cox added his second to make sure of the win.

High-flying Shrewsbury Town were the last game of 2017.
Paul Hursts side closed the gap to Wigan at the top of the table with a 2-1 victory. The goals came from Ben Coker turning into his own net from Alex Rodman’s cross and Ben Godfrey, with Ryan Leonard reducing the gap but ultimately not influencing the outcome.
