17-18 Season Review - September

17 May 2018

We take a look back at Blues’ 17/18 Season…

The start of September saw Blues continue their run of nine games without a win in all competitions, but towards the end of month Blues picked up the form and won three games on the trot.

The first fixture of the month saw them take on Rochdale while donning the newly updated Amy May Trust kit. Phil Brown’s side kicked off the month playing out draw against 10-men Rochdale.

A week later Blues traveled to Charlton in search of their first away win but came away with an unlucky 2-1 defeat with John White getting his name on the scoresheet for the first time this season, netting a well-taken header as he tried to spur his side onto victory.

Three days on and Blues made another away trip, this time to high-flying Shrewsbury. An early goal from Jon Nolan was enough to finish off Blues, but they came away with their heads held high after almost getting themselves back into the game.

After two difficult away fixtures a home game against Northampton Town brought Blues’ form back on track. The visitors took the lead in the 20th minute before doubling their lead on the stroke of half-time. But Blues came out strong in the second half and levelled the game thanks to goals from Jason Demetriou and the returning Anthony Wordsworth.

Blues then went on and ended their away woes with a comfortable 4-2 win against Fleetwood Town. Simon Cox opened the scoring just two minutes into the game, but the hosts equalized minutes later. Blues were handed a one-man advantage when Fleetwood’s Aiden O’Neill was sent off before half-time. The extra man counted and moments later Stephen McLaughlin got his name on the scoresheet before Nile Ranger netted a spot-kick to make it 3-1. Jermaine McGlashan netted a superb shot into the top corner before Devante Cole completed the scoring.

The win at the weekend made a difference for Blues’ giving them that extra boost of confidence they needed since the opening game of the season. The 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon could have easily been more if it wasn’t for the excellent goalkeeping of George Long.

Another home game brought more celebrations for Brown’s side after they beat Blackpool 2-1; Anthony Wordsworth scoring again at Roots Hall, with a deft touch at the front post from a corner just five minutes into the game. Simon Cox doubled the lead just after half-time before Kyle Vassell pulled one back for the visitors. The game looked set to be an easy win, but a penalty in the final seconds of the game hushed the home supports cheers, but Blues’ No.1 Mark Oxley, stepped up and shoved away the spot-kick.
