17-18 Season Review - October

21 May 2018

We take a look back at Blues’ 17/18 Season…

October started well for Blues as they continued their winning streak with a Checkatrade Trophy win, but back-to-back away games saw them once again lose points away from home. However, they recovered from the defeats and ended the month on a three-game unbeaten run.

Blues’ first fixture of the month saw them take on Reading U23’s in the Checkatrade Trophy. Theo Robinson’s first-half goal was enough to see off the young Royals.

The following Saturday Blues travelled to the Keepmoat Stadium in League One to play Doncaster Rovers. It started well for Phil Brown’s side with Anthony Wordsworth netting in the first half. But a second-half thumping and a red card for Anton Ferdinand meant they came away with nothing.

Next up was the daunting-looking trip to the DW Stadium. In truth Blues played well in the first half and it looked set to be a close one. Wigan only had a goal advantage up to the 80th minute, but two goals in the space of four minutes, all after a sending off for Jermaine McGlashan, meant it was yet another away game that Blues were left empty-handed.

After two difficult away fixtures Blues hosted Peterborough at Roots Hall. Brown’s side started well and netted just 10 minutes into the game, but Oxley was tested and the Posh found a way through when the league’s top scorer Jack Marriot who equalised just after halftime.

Just four days later they were at home again, with 21st placed Bury being the visitors this time around. The game included lots of drama and Blues looked set to stick with back-to-back draws. But in the 84th minute, they pushed forward and took the lead thanks to Ryan Leonard’s outstanding shot that rattled the upright.

The final game of the month was at Walsall, a ground that Blues had failed to win at since 2007, but the facts didn’t stop Simon Cox from bagging his fourth goal of the season, netting a well-taken shot from inside the box.
