17-18 Season Review - November

24 May 2018

We take a look back at Blues’ 17/18 Season…

November was a notoriously good month for Blues in recent history with an unbeaten record in the month stretching back to 2009, but this season the streak was broken and Southend finished with just one win in the month.

It started with an FA Cup game against Yeovil Town, a competition which Blues hadn't got past the first round of for the last four seasons, and the run continued as they were defeated 1-0.

Blues' second game of the month was another cup game, this time against their local rivals Colchester. Southend won comfortably, with a goal either side of half time.

The first league outing was at 11th placed Portsmouth. Heading into break Phil Brown's side looked the better, and Nile Ranger had a penalty to take the lead but it was missed. A win would have seen Blues leapfrog the hosts, but a second-half goal from Brett Pitman resulted in another away defeat, ending their unbeaten November streak in the process.

Three days later and Blues travelled to MK Dons. Stephen McLaughlin gave Blues the early lead and they could have added more to their tally, but after Mark Oxley fouled the advancing Chuks Aneke the hosts equalised from the spot.

The month ended with a home fixture against the high-flying at that point Oxford United. Blues took the early lead once again, but it took just three minutes for the visitors to equalise and from then on the game failed to bring any more excitement and Blues had to make do with another draw.
