17-18 Season Review - August

14 May 2018

We take a look back at Blues’ 17/18 Season…

Like every club in all four divisions, the start of the season brought lots of hopes and dreams for football fans across the country.

After previously missing out on the final play-off spot by one point to the eventual winners Millwall, it was a season that Blues fans were very optimistic about.

The campaign started off with a home game against relegated Championship side Blackburn Rovers, one of favourites to win the league.

But against the bookies' backing, Blues came out victorious thanks to goals from Ryan Leonard and Michael Kightly. Blackburn tried to ignite a comeback following Charlie Mulgrew’s 25-yard free-kick, but they failed to break down Blues’ defence.

Three days later Blues hosted Newport County in the Carabao Cup with many fans looking for a successful run in the competition, but the visitors came out victorious after scoring two second-half goals.

Blues’ next game in the league would see them face another relegated side from last season, this time they travelled to Rotherham expecting a similar result to the opening game of the season. But Southend were blown away by a rampant Rotherham side as they lost 5-0 in their first away game.

Plymouth Argyle were next up, another side trying to get to grips with a new division. Blues started the game in flying colours with Sonny Bradley diverting Jermaine McGlashan’s cross into this own net. But Blues failed to test the opposing 'keeper again in the game and the visitors made them pay for it with Ryan Edwards netted the equaliser from a corner.

For the second time in two seasons, Blues faced Gillingham in back-to-back league and cup games. This time they both took place at Priestfield Stadium. The first game was in League One which saw an entertaining game end 3-3 thanks to 5 second-half goals in the space of 30 minutes.

The second game was in the Checkatrade Trophy group stage. The hosts took an early lead before McLaughlin canceled out the opener in the 31st minute. Just as the game was heading in Blues’ favour the Gills went in front after a scramble and clearance in the box bounced off of Anton Ferdinand’s foot and into his own net.
