Mark Oxley was again is superb form against Doncaster, making a significant double stop to deny John Marquis and then from Alex Kiwomya in the first half of the 0-0 draw at Roots Hall.
The Southend number one spoke to the press following the game about getting some solidity back following the 3-0 defeat to Walsall, his personal form and working with Chris Powell.
On the performance…
We seemed more solid. It may not have been the prettiest game but we’ll take a point and move on.
Hopefully we can build on the clean sheet and get a few more. Since the gaffer came in we’ve had three which compared with the start of the season is quite a good return.
As a team, the strikers do their work because they’re as important as the defenders in keeping a clean sheet as well.
We’ve got to build on that now at Rochdale who beat Rotherham on Saturday so it’s going to be another tough game, away from home as well.
On working with Chris Powell…
He’s a very positive guy, he gets the lads buzzing about, he doesn’t get too down when we get beat. He wanted a reaction and I know we didn’t win the game but think he got a reaction and that’s what he’s been about.
Since he’s come in we’ve been lively, everyone’s been at it and he seems like a top guy to work for, so long may it continue.
On if the double save was one of his best…
It’s up there definitely in my time at Southend.
It came so quickly it’s one of those where you’re trying to make yourself big. I’m just happy with the clean sheet and the reaction was key.
On his own personal performances…
I said it at the start of the season that my aim was to play every game and I think, touch wood, so far I’ve done that.
It was about keeping consistent and staying in the team and hopefully I can keep doing that for Southend United.
