Southend United are delighted to announce Mark Oxley has put pen to paper on a new deal at Roots Hall.
The 2017/18 Player of the Season has signed a three-year contract extension to keep him at the club through to the summer of 2021.
Oxley was an ever-present during the last campaign having missed the second half of his first season through injury.
The 27-year-old started every Sky Bet League One game, keeping 15 clean sheets, including in each of the last four games of the season.
Blues’ number one kept 17 clean sheets in all competitions, and he will now be back with Chris Powell’s squad after agreeing a new deal.
He said: “I’ve been in talks for a while now and I’m just delighted to get it all done.
“It’s never nice being out of contract as a player, but when you’ve got a bit of interest and the club wants to sign you it’s a good position to be in, and luckily the Chairman has looked after me here.
“I’ve got three years to look forward to, to kick on from last year and hopefully push on as a club.
“I get on well with the gaffer and ever since he’s come in he’s been a breath of fresh air. What he’s brought in will give us a great chance this year and going forward this is a club that wants to succeed.”
Manager Chris Powell was delighted to keep hold of his number one goalkeeper, adding: “I’m really pleased that Mark has committed himself to the club.
“Everyone can see what a talented goalkeeper he is. I think he grew over the course of last season to end up as a key player for me, but also as Player of the Season.
“He’s very proud to get clean sheets and he managed to get nine in my 18 games. No doubt he was a key component in us winning games and getting points to elevate us into the top 10, so I was really keen for Mark to stay.
“He plays in a key area and if you get that right you’re almost halfway there, because having a good goalkeeper at this level is very important.
“We definitely have one now and that helps us in our rebuilding of a new squad for next season.”
