Southend United U16 striker Charlie Kelman has been called up for the U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team.
Kelman – who is from Wickford but previously lived in America growing up – will fly out to Kansas this weekend ahead of a week-long training camp in an age-group above.
Included will be three games, one of them being against a Kansas City XI.
The former Hornchurch striker, who scored seven in one game which caught the eye of Blues scouts, was shocked when he found out after sitting one of his GCSE’s.
“It was so surprising,” said Kelman. “I came out of my biology exam and my mum told me and I just jumped into the air.
“My dad is an American citizen and I lived out there for six years so that’s how I qualify.
“We had a few phone calls but it was out of the blue.
“To be an U16 player called up for an U18 squad is really pleasing. All the hard work you put in over the season leads up to moments like this.”
