The Opening Weekend Of The 18/19 Season

22 June 2018

As the 18/19 Fixture List was revealed yesterday we look at the opening games of the new season...

Here is the full list of the 2018/19 Sky Bet League One opening day fixtures:

Saturday 4th August

Accrington Stanley v Gillingham

Barnsley v Oxford United

Burton Albion v Rochdale

Coventry City v Scunthorpe United

Fleetwood Town v AFC Wimbledon

Peterborough United v Bristol Rovers

Portsmouth v Luton Town

Shrewsbury Town v Bradford City

Southend United v Doncaster Rovers

Sunderland v Charlton Athletic

Walsall v Plymouth Argyle

Wycombe Wanderers v Blackpool

Southend United's opening game will take place at 3pm at Roots Hall.

This will be the third year in a row that Blues will start the campaign with a home fixture, with the two previous seasons seeing them face Gillingham which ended in a 3-1 defeat and last season saw the visit of Blackburn Rovers which Southend won 2-1.

The game between Blues and Rovers will be the 36th match between the two sides, it just so happens that the last game between the two took place at Roots Hall.

The top game of the opening weekend is the standout Sunderland v Charlton Athletic game with the fixture being selected for TV coverage on Sky Sports.

Both clubs have had a long history of games with possibly the most memorable between fans being the 1997/98 Championship final which ended 4-4 and Charlton went on to win 7-6 on penalties to be promoted to the Premier League.

Another big game will be between the promoted Coventry and Scunthorpe who just missed out on a play-off final place towards the end of last season.

This will be a crucial game for both sides as a loss of points cost them automatic promotion places last season.

Now you know the opening day fixtures all let's left to do is countdown to the first game, just six weeks to go Blues fans. #BePartOfIt!
