Chris Powell’s Blues side signed off pre-season with a 2-2 draw away at National League side Leyton Orient with Jason Demetriou and Tom Hopper getting on the scoresheet for Southend.
With pre-season now done for this summer, all eyes start to focus on next weekend’s league opener against Doncaster Rovers.
And after the draw at the Breyer Group Stadium, the Blues boss gave us his thoughts on the draw as well as a “busy week” in preparation for The Millers next Saturday.
On the Orient draw…
There was some good elements of our play and some things to like, but some small details which we have to eradicate coming up to next week.
The two goals we conceded, a soft penalty to be honest with you and the second goal was poor. It’s come from absolutely nothing, so those sorts of things we can’t have in our 46 game season.
We created a bit more, we looked a bit of threat at times, just our final pass from crosses may have let us down.
On the goalscorers…
Great first goal; JD [Jason Demetriou] coming back to his old haunt is great, he was good. He played 90 [minutes] last week so that’s why we took him off early and gave Elvis [Bwomono] a few minutes.
And then the second goal was a great effort from Simon Cox and Tom Hopper does what all good strikers should do, be alive and hope that it drops to you so that’s good for him and his confidence.
I think he’s lead the line well last week and today and Luke Hyam, it was good for him to get 90 [minutes] and Sam Mantom, so there’s some pleasing aspect.
On Mark Oxley’s injury…
He’s just a bit tight, again with pre-season and with games like that, it’s always precaution. Knowing him as a tough Yorkshireman he’ll be alright but why not give young Nathan [Bishop] a taste?
I wanted to just make sure that we don’t risk anything and he’s out longer, so we made sure that we didn’t aggravate anything and I’m sure he’ll be ok.
On the week ahead…
I’ve said to the group pre-season is over, this is it now. This is our fine-tuning week and for us to bed a few things down in readiness for Doncaster next week.
We’ve got a busy week with ‘Meet the Blues Day’ first off and then we have training Monday, Tuesday and we’ll be preparing from Monday really with regards to Doncaster and towards our season.
We need to look at one or two things. I went up to Doncaster last night – I’ve had a bit of a long evening and an early morning – but I went to watch them and saw things that I’m hoping we can exploit next week.
