A young Southend United side impressed at Bishops Stortford with Amadou Ba grabbing a brace and Theo Robinson getting his name on the scoresheet in a 3-0 win.
Blues included a smattering of experienced first team players in their line-up, with the likes of Anton Ferdinand, Stephen Hendrie and Robinson all featuring and getting some minutes, as well as some fringe first team players who have made their league debuts, such as Michael Klass, Elvis Bwomono, Harry Kyprianou, Lewis Gard, Nathan Bishop and Amadou Ba.
Ba, who has got minutes throughout pre-season, scored either side of Robinson’s goal which came right on half-time.
Blues began the brighter of the two sides and looked a threat down the right-hand side where Elvis Bwomono and Renei Batlokwa both had some joy.
It took until just before the quarter of an hour mark before the first attempt on goal, as Isaac Hutchinson made room for a shot which was straight at Stortford goalkeeper Bobby Mason.
The hosts were next to try and break the deadlock with Ryan Charles testing Nathan Bishop, but the Blues stopper made a comfortable stop.
And shortly afterwards, Ba was on target with the opening goal which came after Isaac Hutchinson’s right-sided free-kick wasn’t properly cleared. The 20-year-old dispatched on the volley high into the net.
Robinson was close to doubling the advantage as he tried to make contact on Hendrie’s excellent cross but he couldn’t poke the ball home.
A similar move presented Ba a great chance to add his and Blues’ second, and despite finding the far corner with his finish, the offside flag denied the Frenchman after Hendrie had picked him out in the centre of the goal.
Robinson made the score a lot more comfortable going into half time when he latched onto a loose ball from close range after Bwomono had his shot saved and slotted the ball under the goalkeeper and into the net.
After the interval Hutchinson burst into the penalty area and fired narrowly wide and then Klass had a header from a corner which had to be tipped behind by Mason.
Anton Ferdinand and Hutchinson were replaced just before the hour mark and Taylor Curran and Harry Phillips replaced them.
And it was the latter of the two subs introduced who had a significant role to play in Ba grabbing his second of the night, as he picked out the striker running onto the ball to put Blues 3-0 up.
Norman Wabo, Eren Kinali, Rob Howard and Emile Acquah also saw some action at the ProKit Stadium meaning Blues ended the game with eleven players to have come through the youth ranks.
Wabo could have made it four with a chance he lifted over the advancing goalkeeper and also over the bar, so it finished 3-0 to Blues.
Next up for Chris Powell's side is a trip to Leyton Orient on Saturday before the attention turns to Doncaster Rovers at Roots Hall in League One.
Blues XI: Bishop, Bwomono, Kyprianou, Ferdinand (Curran 58'), Hendrie (Howard 72'), Batlokwa (Kinali 72), Klass, Gard, Hutchinson (Phillips 58'), Robinson (Wabo 72'), Ba (Acquah 72').
