Southend United hosted Championship side Leeds United on Sunday 22nd July as part of their 18/19 pre-season schedule...
Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United side proved to be difficult opponents with the game finishing 1-1 in front of 3,815 fans.
After an evenly contested first half, the two sides came into the break with a goal a piece, thanks to goals from Harry Lennon and Luke Ayling.
Samuel Saiz had the first chance of the game with a shot that whiskered past Oxley's far post.
Both teams continued to fight for early dominance but it was Leeds who continued to ask questions for The Blues defence as Kemar Roofe took the ball out of his feet and managed to take a powerful strike at goal, which ended up with a comfortable save for Oxley.
Chris Powell was made to make adjustments earlier than expected after Timothee Dieng had to be replaced by Luke Hyam just after eight minutes.
The hosts took the lead just after 20 minutes as a corner taken by Kightly found the head of Harry Lennon which was slotted home beyond the keepers reach.
An excellent one-two move by Ayling and Forshaw resulted in an equaliser for the visitors giving Oxley no chance as Ayling’s shot curled in to the bottom corner.
The two sides went in to the second half without making any substitutions.
Southend were the closest to taking the lead, 20 minutes in to the second half as Kightly’s cross which was flicked on by Cox looped towards the far post but Peacock-Farrell managed to catch it in time.
Leeds continued to show their quality as they became more dangerous on the attack as the game went on. Ayling’s shot from just six yards was superbly blocked by Turner in the dying moments of the game.
The last chance of the afternoon fell to the hosts after excellent play from Robinson and Ba in Leeds area but it was scrambled to safety.
