Blues kickstarted pre-season with a 5-0 win over Great Wakering Rovers on Saturday afte
New signings Sam Barratt, Tom Hopper, Harry Lennon, Sam Mantom and Timothee Dieng made their first appearances as Powell fielded two different XI's in each half.
And the Blues boss was pleased that everyone came through the game and he was able to try out something different in the first half.
Thoughts on the first pre-season friendly…
It’s great for us to renew links with Great Wakering. Their manager Iain [O’Connell] I’ve known for a long time and it’s a big game for them, it’s nice that they get a few of our fans come down and it’s a nice opportunity for a few of our new players to get into the groove with the local area and for everyone to get 45 minutes.
Obviously you don’t want any injuries, you hope they all come through unscathed, you score a few goals and you don’t concede, but they hit the bar in the first minute and I thought here we go, it’s going to be a long season, but we settled down.
We’re going to be rusty, and it will be like that for the next few weeks. That’s what pre-season is all about.
On some of the new boys getting on the scoresheet…
Sam Barratt’s goal was a wonder goal! It was good to see Tom Hopper score too and that Simon Cox, Michael Kightly and Theo Robinson all got themselves going.
We tried a different system in the first half; it was back to what we know in the second half, but these are the times to try that and see if it suits us because we may need to do that during the season.
On Luke Hyam’s absence…
It was just a precaution. He’s been training. To be honest, I’ve been relatively happy we’ve only had one small knock which was him. He was a bit stiff and there was no need to risk him. He’ll be fine for next week.
On any more incomings…
We’re on the lookout and hopefully we might add to what we have. I think we are still short in one or two areas. I’m sure you’ll know about it as soon as we’re ready to push the button.
