We caught up with Blues Manager after a frantic Deadline Day at Roots Hall…

31 January 2018

Chris Powell is pleased with his three signings…

“I’m very pleased; it’s been a big turnaround for me and the club over the last seven days with a game to prepare for and the transfer window deadline looming large in the horizon.

“It was imperative that we got some players in and I’m very happy with our recruits.”

Chris Powell on Spurs loanee Shayon Harrison…

“Shayon is a player I have seen numerous times, he spent some time out on loan at Yeovil Town last season in League Two and I certainly believe he is ready for this level.

“He has quality to score goals, to make goals and his movement is terrific. I hope he has a good time with us at Southend United to develop his own career and help us as a club.”

Chris Powell on Freddie Ladapo returning to Blues…

“Freddie is a different type of striker to Shayon; he’s a big target man who’s young and energetic with a point to prove in my eyes.

“He always wants to get in the box and he can certainly finish, he came from the Premier League after plying most of his trade in non-league football and I believe he can excel here at Southend United – he helps us bolster our striking options even more.”

Chris Powell on his midfield recruit; Sam Mantom…

“Sam is a slightly different signing; he’s played a lot at this level and he has shown his quality in the division. He started his career at West Bromwich Albion before moving to Walsall and what I like is he knows what’s coming in this league.

“He has an eye for a pass, he can create chances and he can also score goals, he knows what it takes to play at this level.”

Chris Powell on Stephen Hendrie’s departure…

“Stephen Hendrie has had a mixed time since he arrived back at Roots Hall in the summer and I’ve spoken to him at length since I’ve been here.

“I’m sympathetic towards him because Ben (Coker) has established himself as our number one left back. Stephen wanted to play and I felt it would benefit him and us possibly in the long run if he gets his confidence back.

“We can revisit it at the end of the season and hopefully see a reinvigorated player, he’s still our player and him going home may suit him at this present time as he looks to get some confidence back.”
