On Tuesday 9th January Womans and girls officer April Smith along with assistant Georgia Raby and apprentice coach Kate Wiseman took the winners of our local competition, Southend High School for Girls to Luton to represent Southend United in the EFL Girls Cup...
The girls worked hard, making it through to the final with wins against Luton, Norwich and Stevenage. However, the road to the final was not a smooth one, as it took penalties to decided a winner between Southend a Stevenage. Southend’s keeper pulled of some vital penalty saves to put them through to the final, which saw a local derby between Southend and Colchester.
The girls took it to the line but a long range goal from Colchester saw them take the win and progress to the next round.
The girls played some great team football with many of their goals coming as a result of great through balls and breaking down the opposition. They were also very calm on the ball when under pressure at the back, being able to look up and find a pass to start the next attack.
Every girl worked hard on and off the ball this showed as in the final game the girls had attracted quite a crowd of support.
Following the 1-0 defeat in the final Woman and Girls officer April Smith said:
“The girls worked very hard and all of them played outstandingly well, this is the furthest I have got in the competition and am very proud of the girls, can’t wait to see who I am taking next year!”
