Chris Powell gave an extensive round-up of the current state of play on fitness levels and of the injured members of the squad.
On Michael Kightly…
He’ll miss out which is a real shame.
He’s been very good, he’s done what I’ve asked of him and more, scored a couple of goals, has good quality in wide areas when he’s taking corners or free kicks or crossing on the run and I really like Mike.
He understands what I want because he’s played a higher level, he’s played at Burnley where their style is something we’ve been mirroring as such, albeit at a lower level. But you’re still asking players to be very diligent in and out of possession and have that work rate and intensity.
He will be a miss, but it creates a chance for somebody else. We may have to re-jig it somewhat. We’ll miss him and let’s make sure he’s right and ready to come back.
On the strike-force…
Simon Cox was missing but he comes back into the fold, young Shayon [Harrison] did well I thought in his first start against Bury. We’ve got Freddie [Ladapo], Marco [Fortune], so I’ve got to think about our forward options, but I’m pleased we’ve got options.
Josh Wright, Sam Mantom and Anthony Wordsworth…
Josh and Sam are training with us now.
Anthony isn’t but he’s close, but the other two are now training.
Josh has played a number of games this year whereas Sam hasn’t played too many, so hopefully they’ll come into the squad, if not I’m sur they will be ready for Oldham.
On Rob Kiernan and Ted Smith…
I haven’t forgotten about them because I make sure they feel involved.
Rob is now doing some light training with the medical department which is good for him, good for his psyche and good that he knows he’s on the way back.
It may be a long and slow road, but whenever a player puts his boots on that’s different to just your trainers in the gym every day. But he’s going to be a while. This isn’t one we’re going to rush.
Ted Smith has taken a while and it’s an injury you can’t rush. There’s no precise or set date for Ted.
