Chris Powell made it two wins from two since coming in as Blues boss after Southend put in a hard-fought and gutsy performance to beat Peterborough United 1-0 at the ABAX Stadium.
Jason Demetriou’s penalty after just seven minutes was the difference as Southend secured their first away win since October against Walsall.
It was also Blues’ first back-to-back wins since that same game against the Saddlers and after the match, Powell gave us his thoughts on the win against Grant McCann’s Posh.
On the win against Peterborough…
It had everything. A lot of things that I haven’t seen yet because I’ve only had one game with them and now my second game I’ve seen a side that has character, has resilience, wants to do well for one another – I saw that in abundance today.
I’m very proud of them because I’ve only known them 9-10 days and they’ve given me everything; the result last week and now today. Peterborough is a tough game, I’m very pleased with their application, it was just outstanding.
It was hard-fought. They’ve got a lot of attacking prowess, Peterborough, a lot of skillful players but a great passage of play for us resulting in a foul, definite penalty, and Demetriou put it away really well.
A clean sheet is what I am happiest about as we’ve not had too many and Mark Oxley, Nathan Bishop, ‘keepers pride themselves on and we could have scored one or two more. Really pleased, it’s a good win all round for us.
On his side’s work rate…
What I want is people working hard for one another. Teams that do well, that’s what it’s built on and then if we’ve got the quality and composure amongst that, even better.
They’ve got to want to play, they’ve got to look after their own performance. Equally, they do that and they do that correctly, it looks after the team performance and we’ve got the outcome today.
The players have worked hard in training, we’ve worked hard on our shape, we’ve worked hard on our defensive capabilities, but I’ve told them I want attacking. You saw them today maybe overplaying at times with a few flicks here and there, and I want that because that’s what the fans want and if we can manage that and have a bit of that it’s great.
I can’t comment on what’s gone on earlier in the season, it’s only about from when I came in, Scunthorpe, Peterborough today and now we look forward to the league leaders [Wigan Athletic] coming to our place next week.
On wanting even more…
What they’re doing for me is first class, but I was always demand more and I’ve just said it too them - brilliant, but there are areas that we can improve on.
I think we can use the ball better, we’re having shots which I want but sometimes we just get a little bit carried away and I just want us to calm down because, actually, we can just build and build and build and get to exactly where we want to go.
