On Saturday we welcome back our three-time leading scorer Lee Barnard to Roots Hall

12 December 2018

For our next home match against Accrington Stanley, thanks to the Southend United Ex-Players Association (SUEPA), we are delighted to welcome back to Roots Hall one of our top scorers over the last decade, Lee Barnard...

Lee was signed by Steve Tilson from Spurs in January 2008, scored on his league debut in a 1-0 win against Leeds United and went on to be our leading scorer that season.

Indeed, despite injuries restricting his appearances in a Shrimpers shirt Lee also finished as our top scorer during the 2008/09 season and then repeated that feat for 2009/10 even though he was snapped up by Southampton in the January 2010 transfer window. That’s some record!

Lee returned to Roots Hall at the end of the 2013/14 season but it was in his first spell that he will be most fondly remembered, scoring many key last minute winners including in injury time in a vital win at Carlisle which helped to get us a play-off spot in his first season with us.

Be sure to be in your seat early on Saturday to help give Lee a great Roots Hall welcome as he gets introduced to the crowd shortly before kick-off.
