Blues had to take it to penalties at Luton to progress through to the next round of the Checkatrade Trophy…
Oxley made two super saves down and to his right to push his side on to win the shootout.
The win shifted a curse off of Southend's shoudler, who hadn't won at Kenilworth Road since 1964.
Chris Powell made four changes to his side that were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup with Shawn McCoulsky and Thep Robinson taking the roles up top.
The first chance of the game fell to Blues, the attack started from Elvis Bwomono’s long ball up to Theo Robinson, the forward then controlled the ball turned his man and send a low cross to the edge of the box, Dru Yearwood ran to the ball but he scuffed his shot and it was hoofed up to the other end of the pitch.
A harsh challenge on Elvis near the corner flag saw an early booking with Luton’s Dan Potts getting his name in the books after just three minutes.
The host's first effort on goal saw them break into the edge of Southend’s box, Aaron Jarvis found some space on the edge of the area and tried a shot on goal only for it to be blocked by the foot of the diving Michael Turner.
Luton started to work themselves into the game and won a number of consecutive corners, but the on-loan Taylor Moore was at hand to head the ball out every time.
Mark Oxley sparked a great counter-attack for Blues, his goal-kick was flicked on by Shawn McCoulsky, the surging Yearwood passed the ball out wide to the advancing Hendrie who took the ball first time but his shot skimmed the post.
Minutes later the hosts were given another yellow card this time Lloyd Jones tackled Elvis on the edge of their area, Southend couldn’t produce anything from the corner as Hendrie’s shot went straight at the wall.
Blues kicked off the second half and were almost gifted the lead, Robinson was running down the right-hand side and curled a cross into the box but Luton’s defenders panicked and headed towards goal and forced Jones to make a goal-line clearance.
Theo found the clearance but this time he passed the ball to Dru, who rounded his man and tried an effort on goal once again forcing Marek Stech to push the ball out for a corner, once again Powell’s side failed to take their chance from the corner.
Down the other end and Luton almost took the lead, the strong LuaLua held the ball well on the edge of the box and turned Dru before sending an audacious effort goalbound, forcing Oxley to make a save but Danny Hylton rose high and headed the rebound towards the open goal, but luckily his chance rattled the upright.
Blues only card of the game saw Dru shown a yellow card for a challenge in the centre of the field.
The first sub of the evening saw Hendrie replaced by Stephen McLaughlin, meaning Southend could keep their shape.
The hosts opened the scoring from a free-kick, Alan Sheehan sent the set-piece into the box for it to be headed out by Moore, but the defender's clearance fell to the feet of Arthur Read who struck the ball on the half-volley and fired home from 25-yards out.
Luton’s first change saw them bring off two players, the first seeing the goalscorer who got injured in the celebrations and was replaced by Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu and Jack Senior coming off for James Justin.
Powell saw the opportunity to make a change of his own with Dru coming off and paving way for fellow youngster Isaac Hutchinson to make his way onto the pitch.
Just as the game seemed over Blues pulled off an amazing move, McLaughlin latched onto Mantom’s pass in the middle of the pitch, he burst forward and cut inside, sending a low curling shot towards goal which was deflected off of the outstretched foot of a Grant who sent the ball into his own net, but McLaughlin goes down as the goalscorer.
Southend’s final change of the evening was a tactical one with Michael Kightly coming on for Luke Hyam, a clear chance to bring on a proven penalty taker.
