It's that time once again Blues fans as you decide who gets your vote for August's Genting Casino Player of the Month award...
Southend United's first month in the 2018/19 season saw them pick up seven points from five games to put them 11th place in the standings ahead of this weekends game against Charlton.
Those points wouldn't have been achievable without a team effort, but we have selected four key players that made their moments count when called upon in August and therefore are up for this month's award.
The nominees are:
The 24-year-old joined Chris Powell’s squad in the summer and has become an instant hit at the club. Hopper started his Blues career with a goal against Doncaster Rovers on the opening day of the season, he then followed this up with another goal against Bradford City and just to round off the month he scored the only goal against Bristol Rovers, which ended a winless run against the Pirates that dates back six years, a worthy candidate.
Mantom returned to Southend on a permanent basis in the summer, after impressing during his loan spell in the second half of the 2017/18 season. The-26-year-old has slotted straight back into Powell's squad and he has impressed in his five league starts this month. The former Scunthorpe man has made Blues tick in the opening month of the season, and played on against Bristol Rovers despite picking up an injury in the first half.
Jason Demetriou’s performance in an unorthodox central midfield position at Bristol Rovers was very accomplished, and he also slotted in at right midfield away at Luton Town. Away at Plymouth the Cypriot international was full of attacking promise down the right-hand side and a constant threat when Blues were piling on the pressure. He then stepped up and slotted the equalising penalty, continuing his spot-kick duties on from last season. Demetriou has played 90 minutes in all five league games, as well as in the Carabao Cup, and is always a consistent performer.
The Blues captain was in brilliant form against Luton to keep the score at 2-0, and also kept two clean sheets in the month of August which came at home to Bradford and away to Bristol Rovers. In that Luton game, the Hatters had nine shots in total and six on target, which kept the Blues number one busy all night. After a disappointing result against Doncaster on the opening day of the season, Oxley has looked like the goalkeeper that won him the Player of the Season award in 2017/18.
