Time to push on says Oxley

29 September 2017

Southend United’s number one Mark Oxley says there will be no resting on their laurels this weekend with the chance secure a third win on the bounce.

Oxley kept his second clean sheet of the season in midweek.

And he hopes that is a sign of things to come.

“It’s been a frustrating start to the season, both for me and the team,” said the shotstopper.

“We haven’t picked up many clean sheets and goals have been coming in, but we knew it was only a matter of time. We were doing the right things at the other end and we just needed to tighten up at the back.

“It’s time to kick on now. We’ve had two good results and we need to follow that up on Saturday.

“The boys that have come in have done well and I know that Anton [Ferdinand] has said before that the boys coming back from injury have done well.

“It has been a big influence, but it’s up to us to follow that up on Saturday.”

Gary Bowyer’s Blackpool side are in sixth place in the league standings, but Oxley is only thinking about what another clean sheet and maximum points.

“We knew as a team we had been conceding sloppy goals and on Tuesday night there were boys throwing themselves in front of bodies, throwing themselves at shots, and I love seeing that."

“1-0 is the best scoreline you can hope for, so long may that continue.

“The two games we have won are good results but they are in the past now. We need to get our heads down in training ready for Saturday.”
