Oxley - "It's a good base to go from"

4 September 2017

Mark Oxley reflects on his first clean sheet of the season against Rochdale

On the 0-0 draw to Rochdale…

I thought the sending off changed it drastically, but I think we controlled the game even before that. The first half we knew what they were about; trying to pass the ball about. We’ve spoken about the injuries in the squad, but I thought the lads that were brought into the game did well and I thought everyone put a shift in.

We’ve said it before that we have to take chances when we are on top like the penalty in the first half for example, but we had other chances after that as well, and we have to learn from it, but it’s a good base to go from.

It’s disappointing, though, not to come away with three points.

On Blues’ first clean sheet of the season…

For me personally, it’s perfect to get that clean sheet, but for the team it’s been a long time coming. We’ve had a few indifferent results if you look at it that way, but this week we did a lot of work on how they play and how to stop them playing, and like I said we had four or five changes in the team and the young lads have come in and took their chance. It’s not just about myself, it’s about the lads in front, they all wanted that as well and that’s a good base to go from heading into next week’s game.

On playing with the youngsters in the squad…

Well you can look at the game on Tuesday when Elvis came in, he was superb, he’s a great lad, very level headed and he took it in his stride. The only thing I can do is talk them through the game and keep them doing what they’re doing and as long as they’re doing that they have a good chance of staying in the team and we have to take that into next week’s game against Charlton.
