On This Day: 7th September

7 September 2017

A brief look back at three games that occurred on this day in years gone by...

1991

Ipswich 1-0 Southend

An early goal from the Tractor Boys was all that was needed to see off the Blues.

The only goal scorer on the day was David Lowe with a long range shot that dipped in under the bar to give Ipswich all the points on the day.

2002

Rushden 3-0 Southend

Two goals in the first half and a final in the second was too much for Blues to form a comeback.

Stuart Gray opened the scoring from the spot 10 minutes into the game.

He also scored the second, with a well taken shot from 8-yards that flew past Darryl Flahavan.

The final came from a free-kick that was taken by Paul Hall in the 83rd minute.

2014

Southend 1-3 Morecambe

Despite Blues opening the scoring Morecambe put three past Blues to secure all three points.

Kevan Hurst opened the scoring in the 30th minute.

But Morecambe’s Andy Fleming equalised five minutes later, in the second half he scored Morecambe’s second to give them the lead.

Jack Sampson finished the scoring on the 56th minute and despite Robbie Threlfall being sent off in the 70th minute Blues never made a comeback.
