A brief look back at three games that occurred on this day in years gone by...

1990

Mansfield 0-1 Southend

An early goal was all that was needed to see off the home side.

Martin Ling set the ball up with a cross that found the head off Blues forward Paul Moran he headed the ball into the bottom right hand corner.

Paul Smith came close to scoring in the second half with a close range shot that hit the post.

 

2004

Colchester 1-1 Southend

Blues Essex rivals Colchester equalised to deny Blues all three points.

Tes Bramble opened the scoring on the day with a shot that went through Aidan Davison’s legs just before half time.

Richard Garcia gave Colchester the equaliser in the 63rd minute as he fired home a curling effort into the bottom right corner.

 

2012 

Plymouth 1-1 Southend

Blues scored the equaliser in the second half and kept the game at a draw despite going down to ten men.

The first goal didn’t come until the second half when Alex MacDonald slid the ball under the advancing Dan Bentley.

It only took four minutes for Blues to equalise when Britt Assombalonga rounded his marker and fired the ball past Jack Cole.

Freddy Eastwood came on for John Spicer in the 68th minute only for him to be shown red 20 minutes later
