Paul Bryne opened the scoring for Blues in the first half.
It wasn’t until the second half that David Hopkin equalised for the Eagles.
Gary Jones put Blues in front again 10 minutes before full time but three minutes later David Hopkin’s equalised again.
Southend 3-2 Brighton
Three Southend goals in the final three minutes of normal time secured a win to the next round of the Carling Cup.
Dean Cox opened the scoring for the visitors in the 71st minute.
It wasn’t until the 87th minute that Blues equalised with the goal scorer being Billy Paynter, a minute later Lewis Hunt scored to put Blues in front.
Freddy Eastwood scored the third goal for Southend in the 90th minute.
Adam El-Abd managed to find time to head in a consolation goal in the same minute to finish the scoring.
The next fixture would see Southend face Leeds away.
Millwall 0-2 Southend
Goals either side of the whistle saw Blues earn a comfortable win over Millwall.
David Mooney opened the scoring after Adam Barrett lobbed the ball from the half way line to David Worrall on the right wing who sent a high cross into the box for Mooney to head the ball from close range.
Adam Barrett scored early into the second half with another header which came from Michael Timlin’s cross.
