On This Day: 14th September

14 September 2017

A brief look back at three games that occurred on this day in years gone by...

1990

Southend 3-2 Preston North End

Two goals from Paul Moran and a goal from Jason Cook saw Blues gain all three points.

Paul Moran opened the scoring early in the first half but David Eaves equalised minutes later for the visitors.

Ronnie Jepson put Preston in front in the second half but Jason Cook scored to deny Preston a win.

But Paul Moran made sure the visitors saw no points with a goal in the 86th minute giving Blues their fifth win in six games keeping their unbeaten run.

1996

Norwich 0-0 Southend

It ended goalless despite an onslaught of shots from Blues in the second half.

Andy Thomson came close to scoring in the 68th minute when he fired a shot from close range into the post.

Paul Byrne also had a close chance when his header went straight into Norwich’s keeper Bryan Gunn.

2002

Southend 1-0 Macclesfield

Just one goal in the first half meant Blues secured all three points.

Rob Newman’s side came out confident in the first half with Leon Cort getting his name on the scoresheet in the 26th minute after some exceptional build up play from the back.

Darryl Flahavan threw the ball out to Stephen Broad who passed the ball to Jay Smith with the midfielder crossing the ball into the box for Cort to slot it home.
