On This Day: 12th September

12 September 2017

A brief look back at three games that occurred on this day in years gone by...

Bristol City 0-1 Southend

Blues earned their second win of the season after a late second half goal sealed three points on the day.

The first half saw little action with only one shot on target for Colin Murphy’s side which came from a Brett Angell header.

The goal scorer on the day was Ian Benjamin after a John Cornwell crossed a low ball into the box for the striker to tap the ball into the net.

Southend 3-3 Norwich

Steve Tilson’s side came back from 3-1 down to earn a hard-fought draw.

Freddy Eastwood opened the scoring nine minutes into the game to give Blues an early lead, the first half looked to have played in Blues favour until Norwich’s Robert Earnshaw scored two goals in three minutes to give Norwich the lead.

Dickinson Etuhu scored the third goal for the visiting side in the 47th minute.

Tilson’s side tug deep and Steven Hammell scored Blues second spurring on the team to get the third goal.

It wasn’t until the 90th minute that Blues scored the equaliser which came from Mark Gower who powered a shot from outside the box into the back of the net.

Southend 0-1 Shrewsbury

One goal in the second half was enough to see Phil Brown’s side beaten on the day.

Glen Rea brought down one of Shrewsbury's players just outside the left-hand side of Bentley’s box

Liam Lawrence stood up to take the kick and swung it into the box which left an unmarked Nat Knight-Percival to head the ball into the bottom right corner.

Anthony Wordsworth had a golden chance to score the equaliser after Ryan Leonard supplied a long throw into the box with a defender heading the ball out to Wordsworth who volleyed the ball only for it to smash into the crossbar.
