Ryan Leonard on the 'biggest three points of the season'

23 October 2017

Ryan Leonard gives his thought on his 84th minute stunner, the win over Bury, the difficult conditions and getting back to winning ways...

On his 84th minute stunner…

Well I hit the first one and I think it must have been going near the corner flag and thankfully the defender got in the way and it came back to me and I managed to side foot it and I think it hit the bar and went it which I’m very pleased about.

On the reaction to the win…

Thankfully we got the three points, but it was probably one of the ugliest games I’ve ever been involved in at Southend. Nothing else really matters when you’ve got the win, everyone just looks at the 1-0 and that’s the main thing; getting the result. We are all very pleased and everyone’s very happy in the changing room.

On the conditions…

It was difficult, it was a bit of a bobbly pitch and the wind was playing a little bit of havoc, it was very tough conditions. But there’s no excuse as both teams had the same conditions to factor, but like we’ve said we’ve won the game and that’s all that matters now and we can put that away. It’s probably one of the the biggest three points of the seasons with the conditions as it was and the back four and keeper thoroughly deserving the clean sheet.

On getting back to winning ways at Roots Hall…

We’ve been doing well at home and we’ve dropped points that we really shouldn’t have dropped and it's disappointing. Thankfully we didn’t drop them today, we managed to get the goal, managed to get the win, but the biggest thing for us is the clean sheet as we haven’t had enough this year and the two-centre backs, the full backs and the keeper put their heads in when they needed to.
