On This Day: 27th October

27 October 2017

A brief look back at three games that occurred on this day in years gone by...

1962

Southend 3-2 Bristol Rovers

Goals both sides of the whistle earned Blues three valuable points against 18th placed Bristol.

Blues opened the scoring on the day with an early strike in the 12th minute which came from outside the box.

Rovers equalised moments later with a headed goal from a corner kick.

Ted Fenton’s side went in front again after a quick counter.

Blues came out stronger once again in the second half and scored first to apply more pressure on the visitors.

Rovers left it late to score their second, but it wasn’t enough to spur on an equaliser meaning Blues moved up to 8th in the English Division 3.

1990

Southend 2-1 Bury

Two first half goals were enough to see off the visitors at Roots Hall.

David Webb’s side opened the scoring early on with a well take free-kick that flew past Bury’s keeper.

Blues' second came after Brett Angell burst into the box and fired a curling shot into the far corner of the net.

Bury pulled one back in the second half after Tony Cunningham intercepted a back pass leaving the forward one on one with Paul Sansome before chipping the ball over the advancing shot stopper.

2001

Southend 1-0 Kidderminster

One goal was enough to see off 16th placed Kidderminster.

Rob Newman’s side scored the only goal in the 2nd minute when Carl Hutchings tucked away from close range.

Kidderminster came close to equalising from a corner when Ian Foster tapped a curling corner kick just wide of the post.

Blues almost had a chance to double their lead when Tes Bramble was brought down in the box only for referee Ben Curson to wave the foul away.
