A brief look back at two games that occurred on this day in years gone by...
Southend 0-1 Colchester
A first half goal was all that was needed to see off Alvin Martin’s side.
Colchester scored the only goal in the 27th minute when Eddie Rowles burst through the midfield and into John Keeley’s box leaving the forward in a one on one situation.
Keeley took the shot coolly and placed the ball on the bottom right corner.
Blues came close to equalising in the second half when Garry Nelson headed the ball towards goal but Mike Walker pulled off an exceptional save to deny Nelson.
Burton 0-1 Southend
Freddy Eastwood scored a 90th minute goal to give Phil Brown’s side a late win.
Shane Cansdell-Sherriff came close to opening the scoring in the 17th minute when the midfielder latched onto a free-kick and headed the ball goal bound only for Bentley to reach out and make the save.
Burton’s second chance came when a low cross was swung into the box with Adam McGurk on the receiving end, but the forward attempted a fancy flick only for the ball to get caught up in the players legs leaving Bentley to gather the ball.
Southend’s first chance came from a free-kick when Hurst sent the ball into the box with Mark Phillips getting a connection on the back of his head but the ball went straight into Jordan Pickford’s hands
Freddy Eastwood scored the winner when the forward chested down a cross and sent a shot flying goal bound for it to take a deflection and smash into the top corner.
