A brief look back at three games that occurred on this day in years gone by...
Southend 4-0 Brighton
Two goals in both half’s secured Blues their fifth win in the English Division 3 (South).
Ted Birnie’s side opened the scoring in the 16th minute.
The visitors came close to equalising just two minutes later when a miss placed pass in the midfield lead to an attack which saw the ball fly just past the post.
Blues doubled the lead on the stroke of half time.
Birnie’s side came out dominant once again in the second half and scored early on from a free-kick.
Brighton’s best chance saw the ball hit the cross bar and bounce into the keepers hands.
The final goal came in the 85th minute after some skilful play from outside the box left Brighton’s defence open for Blues to score a long-range effort.
Southend 1-1 Wolves
Colin Murphy’s side missed out on all three points after a late Wolves goal.
David Martin opened the scoring in the first half with a close range shot that the midfielder slotted into the bottom corner.
It wasn’t until the last ten minutes of the game that Wolves made it level when Lee Mills rushed past Blues defence and slotted the ball past Paul Sansome.
Southend 1-0 Port Vale
On-loan striker Joe Pigott scored the only goal as he helped Blues earn their fifth win in six matches.
Vale’s Uche Ikpeazu had an early effort blocked by John White before Enoch Andoh’s deflected shot was pushed to safety by Dan Bentley.
At the start of the second half, Andoh saw a firing effort saved by Bentley before Colin Daniel fired just wide of the left post from 20 yards.
Southend broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute when Anthony Wordsworth’s low cross was bundled into the back of the net from close range by Pigott.
