'I'm buzzing to captain and lead the team out' Harry Cuthbert

31 October 2017

Youth team captain Harry Cuthbert is looking forward to the experience of leading out the team in the First Round of The FA Youth Cup against MK Dons...

The second-year scholar has helped lift his side to second in the EFL Youth Alliance South East Conference standings ahead of the clash, and he is hoping to use his experience of a previous visit to Stadium MK to his advantage.

“I’m buzzing to captain and lead the team out, especially with the bunch of boys that we’ve got and the team that we’ve got. Hopefully I can lead them well and we get a win,” he said following the 1-0 league win over Cambridge United at the weekend.

“Playing in a stadium is a completely different ball-game to playing on a pitch with just a couple of fans, but I played at MK Dons for the U23s so I’ve got a bit of experience in that stadium. I think the boys have just got to approach the game as if it was any other game and go there to get a result."

MK are the only team ahead of Blues in the league table but, despite the work that Southend have put in to establish themselves as the leading challengers to their opponents' title tilt, Cuthbert is insistent that league form will count for little on Tuesday evening.

“I wouldn’t read too much into the league positions. We’re going to go there as if it was any other team and approach it like any other game and, regardless of where they are in the league, we’ll show them a little bit of respect. We’re not really too bothered about them and we’re going there to get the win.

“It’s three games and three wins, so we’re coming off those with loads of confidence and we’re going to take that into Tuesday night. Hopefully we’ll make it four out of four and enjoy the game. Nothing changes, but the confidence that we’ve got is going to help us out."

And Cuthbert concluded by revealing that this year's squad are ready for the challenge this term: “The FA Youth Cup means just that little bit more than the games on Saturdays, but we’ll approach it as though it were any other game and treat it normally.

“All the boys are really excited. Obviously it wasn’t good last year, but this year we’re going there with the right mentality and coming off the back of a couple of wins, and we’re buzzing to perform on Tuesday night.”
