The Echo

A LAST-GASP penalty save from Mark Oxley secured Southend United a dramatic 2-1 win against Blackpool at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers seemed to be cruising towards a third win in succession when goals from Anthony Wordsworth and Simon Cox put Phil Brown’s side 2-0 ahead.

But Kyle Vassell’s smartly taken strike put the visitors back in the game before Oxley denied Jimmy Ryan from the spot deep into stoppage time to make sure of another win for Blues.

Mark Oxley's stoppage-time penalty save saw Southend United record a third win in succession, beating Blackpool 2-1 at Roots Hall.

Goals from Anthony Wordsworth and Simon Cox put the Shrimpers 2-0 in front but Oxley had to deny Jimmy Ryan at the death to stop Blackpool picking up a point.

A 94th minute penalty save from goalkeeper Mark Oxley denied Blackpool a point and secured a 2-1 victory for Southend United in the process at Roots Hall.

Late drama saw Jimmy Ryan step up from the spot in added time for The Seasiders, however Oxley guessed correctly to preserve all three points for Phil Brown’s side.

Had Blackpool found the net, it would have capped off an admirable comeback, but in the end goals conceded at the starts of the first and second half proved costly.

The Gazzete

A missed penalty in stoppage time made it two away day defeats in a week for the Seasiders.

Gary Bowyer’s players were beaten at Roots Hall thanks to goals in each half from Antony Wordsworth and Simon Cox.

Both were as a direct result of mistakes from Blackpool defender Curtis Tilt and left them playing catch-up.

They halved their deficit through Kyle Vassell’s goal and had a golden chance to level in injury time, only for Jimmy Ryan to see his penalty saved by Mark Oxley.
