Preparation underway at Roots Hall for 2017/18 season...
Renovation on the Roots Hall surface began on Thursday in preparation for the 2017/18 campaign.
Head Groundsman Chris Ball is leading his team in the work after weeks of pitch hire and community events came to an end.
He explained the process of getting the pitch ready for next seaosn to southendunited.co.uk, saying: “First thing we did was scarified it to pull all the debris and rubbish out.
“We scarify it in numerous directions so it pulls out all the dead grass which is embedded in the good grass we’ve got.
“Then we verti drained it after that which allows the air to get into the ground and improves the drainage.
“After that we sand spread it and level that in which improves the levels before seeding it.
“Last season we took two inches off but we’ve scarified it four or five different ways so it’s given it a good hair cut essentially.
“It will probably be around 10 days/two weeks time before we start seeing some grass but it depends on the conditions.
“The first friendly is the 25th but we should start seeing improvement in two/three weeks.”
