Southend United’s unbeaten run was brought to an end by an accomplished Sheffield United side at Roots Hall, but in a month of tricky games, Blues came through it in good shape.
It began on 2nd January with a 0-0 draw against Swindon, a result that in the grand scheme of things left Blues fans disappointed not to come away victorious.
In a game of few chances for both sides it took 75 minutes to really spark into life, but even then it was inconsequential for either side to make a breakthrough.
Then came the 4-2 defeat to the Blades, ending a 13-game unbeaten streak for Blues which, at the start, nobody saw coming.
After weathering an early storm, Simon Cox brought Blues level with his 99th career goal but Sheffield United went into the break 2-1 ahead, before scoring twice in four minutes after the break to send the travelling Blades home happy. Jermaine McGlashan did grab a consolation.
A week later, ice-cold weather called off the game against Bolton Wanderers who were coming off the back of an FA Cup clash with Crystal Palace in midweek.
Instead, promotion chasers Rochdale were the next side to visit Roots Hall, a game Simon Cox stole the limelight in fairy-tale fashion, notching his 100th career goal in the 93rd minute in a 2-1 win.
Marc-Antoine Fortune had opened the scoring, and his account in the league for Blues, before an equaliser from Calvin Andrew.
High-flying Fleetwood were next up for Blues in the North West and they led after Anthony Wordsworth had opened the scoring until the 90th minute when David Ball struck to maintain the Cod Army’s own unbeaten run.
It was a club-record 12-match unbeaten run for Uwe Rosler’s side, showing just how close Blues came to a great win.
Blues ended the month in seventh, behind Rochdale by two points.
Player of the Month: Simon Cox
Simon Cox made it successive DeVines Player of the Month awards, repeating the feat from the end of 2016 at the start of 2017.
It was a momentous month for Cox as he brought up a ton of career goals with a wonderfully taken 90th minute strike against Rochdale which proved to be the winner.
His other goal last month was a fine finish to bring Blues level against Sheffield United.
