It was a packed final month of the season and from a position of strength, Southend were pipped to that last play-off place on the final day of the season in dramatic style.
10-man Southend came from nowhere to score three times in the dying stages of the game against Oldham on April 1st, but their fate turned on its head when Mark Beavers scored an added time winner for Bolton Wanderers three days later.
As much as it was a killer, the 2-1 defeat to Charlton was harder to take.
The character in the squad shone through to relegate Chesterfield next time out in a 4-0 drubbing, but again it disappeared when it was most needed on Easter Monday at home to MK Dons.
Former loanee Ben Reeves stepped up and scored one in a 2-1 win.
Hope was still high, and when news of Millwall’s impending defeat at home to Oxford came through, Blues needed to hang against Shrewsbury. Unfortunately, Junior Brown was the hero for the Shrews who earned their safety with a 1-0 win.
With it all still to play for, Blues needed Bristol Rovers to lend a hand and take points away from Millwall on the final day.
Stephen McLaughlin’s goal was enough to beat Bury, but an 84 minute Shaun Hutchinson goal meant it was Millwall and not Blues who were in the play-offs, leaving Blues to finish in seventh.
Player of the Month: Christian Walton
Christian Walton joined Blues on April 1st from Brighton & Hove Albion and the same day made his debut in a 3-0 win over Oldham Athletic.
Having only met his teammates hours prior to standing in for the injured Ted Smith, Walton looked assured as he kept a clean sheet. The youngster went onto impress as his emergency loan was extended to run until the end of the season.
An impressive cameo in the final month showcasing the promising talent he is.
