Winger previews Stortford clash...
Michael Kightly admits he’s slightly behind the rest in terms of fitness levels, but is hoping he can bank more minutes against Bishop’s Stortford tonight.
The winger pulled on a Southend shirt for the first time in 12 years on Saturday and was speaking at Fairfield BMW ahead of the game against the Evo-Stik Southern League side.
He expects to take another step in the right direction at the ProKit UK Stadium tonight towards being fit for the start of the season.
“Thanks to everyone at Fairfield BMW because I can get to the game tonight now,” Kightly joked.
“My first game back was a bit difficult against Braintree with 10-men, but it’s fitness in the bank and hopefully I can get some more minutes tonight and improve on my fitness so come first day of the season everyone will be raring to go.
“Unfortunately, my break was a little bit longer than everyone else’s because I was out of contract so I didn’t have anywhere to train.
“Obviously I did a bit of training on my own, a bit of gym work, running on the treadmill, but it’s not the same as training with the team and doing football specific movements. It’s good to be doing that again.
“I’m a little bit behind the boys but with hard work I can catch them up and get to full fitness as soon as possible.”
