Blues ended their pre-season with a 2-0 win away at Cambridge United thanks to goals from Marc-Antoine Fortune and a late strike from Theo Robinson.
Following the win at the Cambs Glass Stadium, Southend gaffer Phil Brown gave us his thoughts on the game, man of the match Mark Oxley and whether any new faces will be coming in this week.
On the Cambridge win…
I mixed up the starting 11 because we’re thinking about next weekend. One of two might question that, but at the same time, today was just about going through 100% unscathed.
I’ve got two lots of 11 to choose from today, albeit there were some young kids on show and I’m getting some good signs.
Klass in the first half was different class, Dan Matsuzaka stood up to the big lad in the first half as well and the young trialist did quite well.
There’s a lot of positives today. Again, I’m not focusing on the results, it was just a case of getting through to the starting line on the 5th of August with as many fit and unavailable as I can choose from.
Where we’re concerned we’re somewhere near but there’s a little bit of sharpening up to do which will happen next week.
On Mark Oxley…
That’s his third full 90-minutes and he saved a penalty. I’m not too sure ours was a penalty and I wasn't too sure theirs was a penalty.
There was a little bit of handbags for theirs and he just went over. If you take it back to last season if ours was a penalty then the Millwall one was GBH.
We get them during the course of the season, sometimes you don’t during the course of the season, but in a pre-season friendly I don’t really want them.
Ox had to stand up to a penalty and he made a great save and then he had to stand up to another couple of efforts.
On potential new signings…
I’m hoping the weekend will bring me a new player and if it does it will be all well and good.
I think they’re suitably impressed with our trialist and I know the Chairman is already talking to the agent; whether we can get a deal on the table is another question.
I like the kid’s attitude and he looked like he enjoyed it today and he wanted to stay on. I’ve enjoyed and liked what I’ve seen. Hopefully, we can get a deal on the table, and if we can bring another couple in next week we’ll be somewhere near ready for the start of the season.
