Ryan Leonard after 3-1 win over Scunthorpe...
Ryan Leonard praised the character of the squad as Southend overcame an early deficit to come away victorious against Scunthorpe United.
Murray Wallace gave the visitors a fifth minute lead before Marc-Antoine Fortune, Simon Cox and Leonard netted for The Blues.
The midfielder stated just how important a three points it was that also demonstrates the belief and strength of mental toughness in the camp.
“The character of the team out there was brilliant,” he said. “I think we’ve had that for most of the season.
“Alright we didn’t start the season great and we gave everyone a head start to be honest, but to come back from a goal down against the league leaders shows massive character from every single one of the boys.
“We’ve had a tough run against teams around us or above us. No game is easy but to pick up points against the top sides is massive and if we can keep that up then we’ll have a good shout this year.”
It’s now one defeat in 17 for Phil Brown’s men and seven points from four games against sides above them.
Leonard said it was an exciting game to play, as he notched his second goal of the season.
“It’s a massive win, he added. “It was probably one of the most enjoyable games this year. It helps that we’ve won but it was a great game to play in with some good football and some whole hearted tackling shall we say!
“It was a massive goal for me and it came at the perfect time to be fair. It killed them off and they started to get a little bit frustrated.
“It’s about time I popped up. I’ve been playing a little bit more defensively but it was nice to get in the box and take the chance, off the outside of the foot.”
