Phil Brown on the task ahead this weekend against Millwall...
Phil Brown spoke of the mentality needed to beat Millwall on Saturday in his pre-match press conference at Fresco Box on Thursday afternoon.
Blues have already faced Millwall at The Den this season, losing a narrow FA Cup tie 1-0 in the first round back in November.
Heading into the third meeting between the two sides this campaign, Brown emphasised the need for having the right mix of emotion to win the game.
“It’s a day for cool heads, but it’s got to be balanced,” he said.
“It’s being aggressive, knowing full well they are a strong team which their FA Cup run has proved against Premier League teams.
“I’ve watched them of late and they’re a good team; a good unit.
“Hopefully buoyed by the fact there will be a good following support, because in the FA Cup first round we must have taken around 1,200/1,300 supporters, so if we can get a couple of thousand then the lads will be absolutely buzzing from that. Hopefully the performance will then follow.”
It’s one defeat in 17 for Southend, which came against the Sky Bet League One leaders Sheffield United in January.
But Brown said every game is a clean slate and there will be no thoughts of the exemplary form come 3pm on Saturday afternoon.
"It's always nice to be in a rich vein of form but we're not thinking about what has gone on in the past,” he added.
"If we turn up on Saturday then we will give anyone a game.
“We're going to The Den and something always happens whether it be at our place or their place.
“It's always a feisty game, which is to be expected, but it's a game of incidents. I don't know what it is.
“Maybe both sets of players build themselves up for these games, but on the day it's just another game and we've got to prepare for it like it's just another game.
"It's difficult to do that because we're local rivals, we've got a couple of players that live in the area.”
