POTM | Vote for your DeVines Player of the Month

2 February 2017

Cast your vote!

Once again, it's that time to vote for your DeVines Player of the Month.

Southend United are asking supporters to vote for their star performer for month of January by casting their vote on the official Twitter account @SUFCRootsHall.

It was a difficult schedule in the first month of 2017 as Blues took on rivals for a play-off place, but it started with a 0-0 draw away to Swindon Town.

Sheffield United inflicted Blues' first defeat since October with a 4-2 loss before a dramatic 2-1 win over Rochdale and a 0-0 draw with Fleetwood Town.

You can choose from the following outstanding performers:

- Ted Smith
- Jason Demetriou
- Simon Cox
- Marc-Antoine Fortune

Ted Smith replaced the injured Mark Oxley in goal and has put in a string of fine performances. A very commendable clean sheet against Swindon as well as a crucial save in the last kick of the game against Rochdale to secure a 2-1 win, which Phil Brown immediately wished to congratulate him on after the game, are just two things that stand out. Smith has been a very able deputy and Brown will have a big decision to make when Mark Oxley is fit.

Jason Demetriou continues to be a consistent figure at right back with his forays into the attacks just as prominent as his defensive solidity. Demetriou is part of a back five that conceded twice against rivals Fleetwood and Rochdale with the only blip coming against a rampant Sheffield United in a 4-2 defeat.

Simon Cox wasn't as prolific as December, but still scored twice including a vital winner against Rochdale; his 100th career goal. The other was a fine finish to bring Blues level against Sheffield United.

Finally, Marc-Antoine Fortune opened his account for Blues in the league against Rochdale, but continues to bring so much to Blues' attacking intentions. He ran Fleetwood ragged at Highbury Stadium and his hold up play was just as notable. Without a doubt, January was the 35-year-olds best in a Southend shirt.

Voting will close at midday on Monday 6 February.
