We take a look at another Blues Academy graduate..
Jack Payne started his career with Southend’s youth academy back in 2009 and worked is way up through the ranks, making his first team debut on 6th August 2013 against Yeovil Town in the Capital One Cup.
Payne's first goal came just over a year after his debut against AFC Wimbledon in another cup game, this time in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
Payne was an integral part of Phil Brown’s League Two promotion season and continued to prove his worth in League One, scoring nine goals in 35 appearances, with a number of key performances for the Blues.
His performances caught the eye of a number of Clubs and Payne was unable to agree a new contract with Southend United before moving to Championship side Huddersfield Town.
Payne enjoyed a successful first season with the Terriers, securing promotion to the Premier League in dramatic fashion during a penalty shoot-out at Wembley against Reading in the play-offs.
On 27th July this year Payne moved to Blues fellow League One side, Oxford United on a season-long loan and made his debut on 5th August against Oldham Athletic.
Payne has flourished so far, with three assists in as many games and we welcome him back to Roots Hall this season.
